Hawaiian Maui Tacos plans to open 10 restaurants
in Houston during the next five years.
Meritage Enterprises has entered into a development
deal with the quick-casual restaurant chain, which blends traditional
Mexican food with the flavors of Hawaii, and plans to open the
first two Houston-area locations in 2007. Maui Tacos is based
in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Michael Yang, a spokesman for Meritage Enterprises, said the restaurants
will resemble laid-back beach shacks.
The first Maui Tacos opened in 1993 in Napili,
Maui, when chef Mark Ellman started a Mexican restaurant to settle
his craving for a taqueria. He had six more sites on Maui, Oahu
and Hawaii within three years.
There are currently 18 Maui Tacos locations
in 10 cities across the United States.
